February 13 – Daily Message – 2 Corinthians 5:7

2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV “for we walk by faith not by sight.”

What does this mean to walk by faith and not by sight? Does it mean that you do not believe what your eyes see, ignoring what your brain is telling you?

No, it doesn’t mean that at all. Clearly what is in front of your eyes is what is real for that moment within the natural world, however, notice what thoughts, assumptions, and judgements are associated with what you see.

For instance, if you are looking for a job and you are going through interview after interview after interview and no one is offering you a job you can see that you do not have a job. Walking by faith and not by sight does not mean that you convince yourself that you have a job at this moment. But when  you see that you do not have a job you make other judgements like “I am unemployable”, “No one wants to hire me”, “I am worthless”, “I am going to be destitute”, “my life is over”, “my spouse will leave me”, or any other type of judgements. You may even say “God doesn’t love me”, or “God doesn’t care about me”, or “God isn’t powerful because He can’t give me a job”, or “God has promised to take care of me and clearly He is not so I am going to take control and figure this out myself”.

This is when you are living by sight and not by faith. It is not the lack of job that is causing the problem, it is the judgements and the value you give to what your eyes see that cause you to walk by sight.

This is when you need to revamp your words and thoughts to believe what I have told you, clearly, through the Bible and through My words to you. Things like:

Hebrews 13:5 ESV “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Psalm 91:5-6 ESV “You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the calamity that destroys at noon….no harm will.

Psalm 91:9-11 ESV “Because you have made the LORD your dwelling—my refuge, the Most High—no evil will befall you, no plague will approach your tent. For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.”

Instead, make this choice:

1 Chronicles 22:13 ESV “Be strong and courageous. Fear not; do not be dismayed.”

Walking by faith and not by sight means that you believe My promises for the future over the “natural conclusion” that you believe may come from the circumstances you currently find yourself in. They normally are based on you wondering if I really love you. They are based on your fear of abandonment and they are, rarely but not always, based on the future rather than what is happening right now.

Prayer: Lord, please help me see what is happening right now and not what I believe might happen in the future so that I can walk in the faith that You have taken care of all my days, You have great plans for me and You will always provide so I do not need to worry about what will happen, I can simply focus on how You are taking care of me right now, at this moment.

Amen
