Matthew 5:22 ESV “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”
Many people believe that justice is required in order to not be angry and so they say they will not be angry as soon as they are treated the way they believe they deserve to be treated. Many people believe they need to make sure they bring justice to themselves, but I say very different things. I say:
Philippians 2:3 ESV “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
Romans 12:19 ESV “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’”
Romans 12:14 ESV “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.”
Romans 12:16 ESV “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.”
Romans 12:21 ESV “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
The point of these verses is not to get people who are being oppressed to remain oppressed. If you are oppressed and have ways to get out of that oppression, then that is important. If you are being abused, I am not telling you to stay in an abusive relationship when you have a way out. Instead, I am telling you:
Matthew 11:27,28 ESV “All things have been handed over to me by my Father…Come to me, all who labor and are heavy lade, and I will give you rest.”
The point of these verses is not whether you will choose to trust men but to ask you to trust Me. When you are angry, do you consider it to be your problem or My problem? When you are being mistreated, do you think you have to solve the problem or do you think I will solve it for you and with you? If you are in a terrible situation, do you believe you are the only one who can get you out of that situation or do you believe that I will get you out of that situation.
Of course, you need to participate. You need to obey; you need to love Me with all of yourself and all that you have within Me. You sometimes need to love Me so much that you are willing to do what seem like crazy and unbelievable things.
When I ask you to bless your enemies do you see that if your enemy were blessed, truly blessed, it would significantly impact the situation you are dealing with in a positive way?
Do not take these verses to mean that you are to be a punching bag for someone, you are a child of the most high God and I do not want you to be a punching bag. Take these verses, instead, to mean that, in order to live the way that I ask you to live you will have to put your trust in Me in a way that seems unreasonable. It will go against your sense of self protection, and it will go against your sense of justice within your marriages, friendships, and even work relationships. It is essential that you entrust all of your problems to Me and then let Me work out what is truly going on – on both sides. There are always 2 sides to every situation. Come to Me – you are weary. Let Me take care of things. I know what is going on beneath the surface and I care. But if you take your problems into your own hands, I will certainly allow that and I will step away until you are willing to let Me handle them. I know this is hard. If it were easy everyone would do it.
Come to Me. You are so weary that you are taking it out on other people. Give Me your problems and let Me help you with them.
