Galatians 5:16 NLT “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives, then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
Of course, the question many ask is this…what does it mean for the Holy Spirit to guide your lives? How do you even do this?
These are really good questions, and it starts by giving permission. Because I gave all human beings free will, before I (or My Spirit) begin to do any type of work within you I ask for your permission. Some people have a really hard time with this because they say that I am God and I can do anything, which is true, however, I choose not to do anything that I want because that would cause Me to overpower the entire human race and it would defeat the purpose of giving people free will.
But back to the point at hand.
Simply pray a prayer something like “Holy Spirit, I give you permission to guide my life. Please help me not resist because my human nature will naturally resist and remove this permission through my actions and that is not what I want. I give you permission to override my resistance as you guide more and more of my life. Amen.”
It is as simple as that. Now, simply watch and enjoy the changes that naturally begin to happen. If you feel that you are resisting or removing your permission for the Holy Spirit to guide you then you can simply pray:
“Holy Spirit, I am genuinely sorry for sending mixed signals…saying that I want you to guide me and then resisting you. Please forgive me. With all of my free will I give you permission to guide me. Let’s try this again and thank you for your patience as you help me let go of the things that I don’t really want but I think I want.”
Now, you are back on track and your sinful nature cravings will be overcome by the power of the Holy Spirit. Of course, you can expect some pruning to happen but what I will prune is not what you want in the first place so simply let go of it and let Me take it away and set you free. Then the Holy Spirit will fill that space with something much better.
You may need to lay down control, and you may need to lay down expectations of what you think your life should look like but it is well worth it. I have a much better life planned for you!
