Romans 10:13 ESV “For everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”
The follow up verse is important also:
Romans 10:14 ESV “But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him?”
Which, of course, leads to the verse:
John 6:29 ESV “Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’”
What does it mean to believe?
Looking up the word in Strongs (4100) at the very end you see that the context of the verse indicates that this is the “believing that leads to/proceeds from God’s inbirthing of faith”.
You try to do so many things from your own strength and from your own will. But this is not what I ask or what I want.
The biggest mistake the Israelites made, which is shown almost laughably in the following verse:
Joshua 1:6 ESV “And they answered Joshua, ‘All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.’”
Why it this laughable? Because they resisted Me and they resisted Moses the entire time they were in the desert. Even at the end of the journey through the desert 1 ½ tribes remain in the desert rather than crossing the river and entering the Promised Land because of their disobedience.
Paul clearly recognizes that it is impossible for human beings to make choices they know they need and even want to make:
Romans 7:15 ESV “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”
Do you not yet understand that the only way you can live a life that is full, fulfilled, and abundant is to rely completely on Me without relying upon yourself?
Proverbs 3:5-7 ESV “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes”
I compare My people to sheep. Sheep are one of the least powerful animals in the world and they are one of the most dependent on their shepherd.
I did not make you to be self-sufficient, self-powerful, self-directed. I made you to be sheep who follow Me and the curse of this world is the desire to be your own god and to make your own choices and live your life the way you want to live it.
But only do this by realizing how amazingly good I am and that what I want for you is actually better than what you could ever imagine wanting for yourself.
Ephesians 3:20 ESV “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,”
And I want to give you what you truly want, not just what you think you want:
Psalm 37:4 ESV “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
And I want to make everything turn out for good:
Romans 8:28 ESV “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
If you really want to change your entire life and live the way that I intend with all the blessings and fullness of the life I created you to live you can focus on three things.
- Delight yourself in Me (Psalm 37:4)
- Love Me with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:31) because this is what evokes the power of Romans 8:28…it is what causes all things to work out for good.
- Fear Me over all other things in this world (Proverbs 9:10). Do not be afraid of financial failure, being too fat, not finding a spouse, being barren, not being able to find a job that satisfies, the terror of the night, health concerns. Don’t spend a moment on any of these things, instead fear Me by putting Me first and at a higher authority than any of these things.
If you do these three things you will completely transform your life but…of course…you do not have the strength to do these things well so start simply by asking Me to help you do all the things I ask you to do.
Follow Me! Let go of all the maps where you are searching for answers and directions and follow Me. Let go of your desire to rule and control your own life…deciding what it will be and what it will not be and follow Me. Day by day. Hour by hour. It’s impossible for you to do but for Me all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). I don’t expect you to be self-sufficient. I desire for you to be God sufficient meaning that I am enough for you. I know that you need many things….but do you recognize that I am all that you want? Follow Me, fear Me, trust Me, believe in Me and most of all love Me with all that you are and all that you have. This will lead to the very life you most desire and the greatest protection you can experience.
